Oropharyngeal cancer is on the rise, and oral health professionals now have the power to prevent it. This session will outline easy to implement strategies for all members of the dental team and the oral health community to play an active role in reducing the incidence of this devastating cancer. Participants will also gain insight into the new American Cancer Society recommendations on the administration of the HPV vaccine. Participants will hear directly from a survivor of HPV related cancer regarding the significant challenges patients fighting this disease endure to further understand why it is so crucial for youth to get vaccinated to prevent this cancer from interrupting their future.

Dr. Sharon Perlman is a member of the Council on Practice of the American Association of Public Health Dentistry and organization’s representative to the National HPV Vaccination Roundtable, founded by the American Cancer Society and CDC. Dr. Perlman earned her DDS and Master of Public Health in Health Policy and Administration at the University of Illinois, and for more than 25 years, has passionately championed improving oral health for underserved families. She serves as the Oral Health Progress and Equity Network Illinois State Representative, Board President of Dental Lifeline Network • IL, and 8th District ADA delegate. A leader on the local, state, and national level, she is a fellow of the American College of Dentists, International College Dentists and Pierre Fauchard Academy.
Mike West has been a trial attorney for 27 years and currently serves as the member in charge of the San Diego office for Clark Hill, a national law firm with over 700 attorneys. He is a married father of two who was diagnosed with Stage IV throat cancer due to HPV in August 2017. Now in remission for just shy of 4 years, Mike shares his story to schools, parents, and providers as a fierce advocate, working with the California Department of Public Health, Head & Neck Cancer Alliance, and American Cancer Society to bring awareness to the prevalence of the HPV virus in our society and for the promotion of the HPV vaccine for children to protect them from HPV related cancers in their future. Mike also enjoys sharing his story of survival to bring hope to those facing devastating obstacles in their life by finding blessings around you even in the darkest of storms, and was recently recognized as the HPV Vaccination Advocate of the Year by the California HPV Vaccination Roundtable for 2019.
